How to AirPlay to TV

Apple has provided a so-called AirPlay feature that lets the iPhone, iPad, and Mac users mirror their device’s display to a bigger screen, a TV, for instance. The AirPlay feature allows you to wirelessly cast the audio and video content from your Apple device i.e. the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Mac PC to the Apple TV or any other AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV like Roku. The only requirement is that both the devices should be on the same Wi-Fi network. In this guide, I am going to serve you a complete how-to tutorial on how you can AirPlay the content from your Apple devices to your TV. The guide is also going to show you how you can also cast the content from your Windows PC to the TV using AirPlay. Let’s get started.

How to AirPlay to Apple TV or AirPlay 2 Compatible Device

Let’s begin the tutorial on how you can AirPlay to TV. More specifically, to the Apple TV or other AirPlay 2-compatible Smart TV.

Mirror iPhone or iPad to TV using AirPlay

To AirPlay to your TV from your iPhone or iPad follow these steps:

  • Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-left of the display (for newer models) or by swiping up from the bottom edge (for older models).
  • On the Control Center panel, tap on the Screen Mirroring option.
  • You may be asked to enter the passcode shown on your TV you are mirroring the content on.
  • After the connection is successful, there will be a checkmark next to the name of the TV.

Once this is done, you are free to use the iPhone or iPad and whatever you’ll do on your device screen will get mirrored to the TV screen. In order to stop the mirroring, simply open the Control Center and tap on Stop Mirroring.

Mirror Mac to TV using AirPlay

Now, let’s talk about how you can use the AirPlay feature on your Mac PC to mirror its screen to your TV. To do so:

  • Open the Control Center by clicking on its icon from the top menu bar.
  • In the Control Center panel, click on the Screen Mirroring option.
  • Next, you’ll see a list of available devices to which you can mirror your display. Click on the name of the device which you want to use, in this case, it will be your TV.

As soon as you’ll select your TV, Mac’s display will flash and a few seconds later you’ll be able to see your Mac display contents on the TV screen as well. Once you are done, using the mirroring you can turn it off by again going to the Control Center and clicking on

Mirror Windows to TV using AirPlay

Lastly, you can also mirror the media content from your Windows PC to your TV screen using AirPlay. Please note that the AirPlay feature will only work for the content that is available on your iTunes.

  • Open iTunes on your Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC and play the media content i.e. some video.
  • Now, click on the AirPlay button located at the bottom-left of the screen.
  • You’ll get a list of devices available to use the AirPlay feature with. Select your TV from that list.
  • You may be prompted to enter the passcode flashing on your TV.

Once done, you should be able to watch that video on your TV as well. In order to stop the mirroring of the iTunes content, click on the AirPlay option again and select My Computer from the list.

What if I don’t have compatible Smart TV?

You may also be interested in mirroring the content to your TV which is not using Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible for example, the Fire TV or Chromecast with Google TV. In such a case, it is unfortunate to inform you that you can do this wirelessly. You will have to use the wired connection in this case. The AirPlay feature demands Apple TV or at least compatibility with AirPlay 2.

Talking about the wired solution to mirror your iPhone, iPad, or Mac display, you can connect these devices to your TV via the HDMI cable. Now, you might ask, how would you connect that HDMI cable to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac PC. So, in order to do that, you’ll have to use an HDMI adapter. For iPhone and iPad users with a lightning port, you can buy Apple’s $49 Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Or if you have a 2018 or newer iPad or Mac PC with the USB-C, you can buy the $69 USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. Or if your Mac is old and uses the display port, then you can buy a DisplayPort (DP) to HDMI Adapter from Amazon.

Once you have the adapter and the HDMI cable, simply connect one end of your HDMI cable into the TV and another end into the adapter. now, connect the adapter to your Apple device and your content should get automatically mirrored to the TV of that HDMI port is selected on your TV.

Bottom Line

So this was the complete guide on how you can AirPlay to TV, the contents of your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Mac, and Windows. In order to use the AirPlay feature i.e. to wirelessly cast your screen to TV, you will need to have either Apple TV or an AirPlay 2-compatible TV like Roku. If you are using a non-compatible TV to use AirPlay, then this is currently not possible. In that case, you’ll have to rely on the wired HDMI connection b/w your device and TV to mirror. I am hoping that this was a helpful guide for you and you would have got to know something new and helpful.
