The very first thing to do in such a scenario is to restart Discord. Restarting Discord will make sure to start a new session with everything refreshed including BetterDiscord and its themes and plugins. To restart Discord:

Tip: Prior to restarting the Discord app manually, consider pressing Ctrl + R (Windows) or Command + R (Mac) to refresh discord. Do this a couple of times and if Better Discord didn’t work then follow the below steps.

Restart Discord on Windows

Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on the keyboard to open the Task Manager on your Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC.

Step 2: Switch to the Processes tab and select Discord from the list.

Step 3: After selecting Discord, click on the End Task button to close Discord completely.

Once done, relaunch Discord and see if the issue is fixed.

Step 3: After selecting Discord, click on the Force Quit button to close Discord completely.

Once done, relaunch Discord and see if the issue is fixed.

Fix 2: Take help from the BetterDiscord installer

The BetterDiscord and BandagedBD installers can be one of the best approaches to get the issue fixed. As these installers are used to install BetterDiscord, the same can also be used to repair the same. You can check your downloads folder if you have these installers or else, you can download from the links below.

Once you are done with downloading any of your preferred installers, launch it and accept the license agreement. Select the Repair BandagedBD or Repair BetterDiscord option on the next screen based on what installer you are using. Then,

Repair BetterDiscord using BandagedBD

Step 1: Select the Repair on stable from the left of the screen and check all the issues that you’re facing with your BetterDiscord.

Step 3: Wait for the repair process to get completed.

Step 4: After completion, you’ll get a popup saying your need to reinstall BetterDiscord. Select Yes and after the reinstallation is complete, open the Discord app and see if the issue is fixed.

Fix 3: Try Removing Custom Themes And Plugins

The custom themes and plugins can sometimes create issues with the normal functioning of BetterDiscord. You can try removing them to see if they are the real culprit. To remove custom add-ons:

Step 1: Open Discord and open the User Settings by clicking on the gear icon

Step 2: Under the BetterDiscord section in the left-hand menu, go to Plugins > Open plugin Folder

Step 3: Now, once you’re in the plugins folder, you can either delete the add-ons or can move them somewhere else in order to restore them if they are not the real reason behind the issue.

Step 4: Repeat the above process with the User Settings > Themes.

Once done, restart the Discord app and check if BetterDiscord is now working by adding new themes and plugins.

Fix 4: Try Changing The Discord Language

This workaround has been seen working for many BetterDidcord users. By changing the language you are actually changing Discord’s appearance settings which will also affect BetterDiscord. To change the language:

Step 1: Open the Discord User Settings by clicking on the gear icon on the bottom left of the Discord window.

Step 2: Select the Language option from the left and then set the language to some other as per your convenience.

Step 3: Once done, restart Discord and see if the issue is fixed. Also, don’t forget to revert to the changed language by following the same steps.

Fix 5: Re-login to Discord

Logging out of your Discord and logging in back into it can also help you in solving the issue. This workaround has also been reported in many community forums to be working for them. You can also give it a try. To do so:

Step 1: Click on the gear icon located at the bottom left corner to open the User Settings.

Step 2: Click on the Log Out option from the left.

Step 3: Again click on Log Out to confirm the selection.

Once done, completely close Discord and its services, relaunch it and log in to see if the issue is resolved.

Fix 6: Temporarily Remove the “bdstorage.json” File

For Windows users, there is an additional fix. Try to remove the bdstorage.json file and see if the issue is fixed. To do so:

Step 1: Open the Run dialog box by pressing Win + R and type-in %AppData% and press OK.

Step 2: Go to the BetterDiscord folder.

Step 3: Here, look for the bdstorage.json file and move it somewhere else.

Once done, restart Discord and see if the issue is fixed. If the issue persists, you can put the bsdtorage.json file back in its original location and move on to the next fix.

Fix 7: Reinstall BetterDiscord

You can also try reinstalling BetterDiscord to get the issue rectified. Or if you want, then you can also reinstall the complete Discord app. To uninstall BetterDiscord you can use the BetterDiscod installer which you can download from here.

Step 1: After the installer is downloaded, launch it and select Uninstall BetterDiscord option on the next screen.

Step 2: Checkmark the Remove from Stable option along with the other two options under the Additional options to make sure to keep no file data on your computer.

Step 3: Finally, click on the Uninstall button.

Once done, relaunch the BetterDiscord installer and install BetterDiscord again.

Tip: In place of reinstalling BetterDiscord, you can also consider reinstalling the complete Discord app to be sure.

Fix 8: Contact Support

Lastly, if nothing works, consider reporting the problem to BetterDiscord support. Its official Discord server has a dedicated channel to resolve the problems like this one.

Simply, join this BetterDiscord server and go to its FAQ channel where you can see if the issue has been resolved earlier for someone else. If not, then you can report the issue by going to the Support channel.

Bottom Line

So, that’s all I had for you guys in this fixing guide and I am hoping that you’ll be able to fix the BetterDiscord not working issue after going through all the fixes mentioned here.

There is no universal fix to this issue and hence you’ll have to go with the hit and trial by performing all the fixes one by one. Normally, non-functioning of BetterDiscord gets away by a simple restart of Discord, or by re-logging into Discord.

But in some cases, you may have to use the installers to repair it. Other workarounds like removing custom themes, plugins, bdstorage.json files, and changing the Discord language sometimes also work.

Lastly, if nothing works you can try reinstalling BetterDiscord or the whole Discord app.
