Apple is really good at pushing regular updates to its devices. But sometimes it becomes quite frustrating while updating the device, especially Mac. There are a number of Mac users who own MacBooks, iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini, Mac Studio, etc. running even the newest macOS like Big Sur and Monterey but still, they get the notorious error of Installation failed while installing the update. The error message says “An error occurred while installing the selected updates“.

If you are also one of those users who are not able to install the update on your mac then bear with me in this fixing guide and I’ll share some working fixes that you can try to get this issue resolved.

How to Fix “An error occurred while installing the selected updates.” error on Mac

This error is not very details in terms of describing what is the exact cause of it. Hence there are different possible assumptions that we can cause it. Based, on those assumptions, here are the different fixes to it.

Fix 1: Restart Mac and try again

This is a pretty basic yet effective way that can solve your issue. Simply restart your Mac and after that, try to download and install the update. Maybe there is some background process that is interrupting the installation process and if this is so, a simple restart would get you covered.

Fix 2: Retry installing after some time

A busy Apple server can also make this issue occur. If Apple has just dropped the update that you are trying to install, then it is very much possible that are millions of other Apple users who are also downloading the same update as you. And this can make the server not serve each user properly and this can cause the installation failed problem on your Mac. Hence it is a good option to take a step back and try to install the update after a couple of hours.

Fix 3: Check your storage

Insufficient free space on the system can also put you in an installation failure problem. Hence you should make sure that your Mac has at least 5-8GB of free disk space for normal updates and around 20-30GB of free space for major macOS updates. To check and manage the storage usage:

Step 1: Click on the Apple logo on the top left of the menu bar and go to About This Mac.

Step 2: Switch to the Storage tab and there you’ll be able to see how much of the storage is in use and how much is free.

Step 3: To manage the usage, click on the Manage option. You can see how much of the storage is being used by which of the macOS section like Applications, Documents, Mails, etc. and can accordingly make some free space by deleting the unwanted items.

Fix 4: Check your internet connection

Unstable or improper internet connection to the system is another possible reason that can halt the update process. Hence make sure that your internet connection is working fine with no break in between. Also, make sure to place the Mac in a proper range of your Wi-Fi router to get a proper reception of the data from the internet. You can consider restarting your router, and modem and reconnecting the Mac PC.

Fix 5: Unenroll from Beta Updates

If you are trying to download and install the final version of macOS and it is continuously failing, there are chances that you are enrolled in the beta program. If you have enrolled in the beta program lately and have not unenrolled from it in order to get the final build of the macOS, this can interrupt the process for sure.

Make sure to unenroll from the program by going to System Preferences > Software Updates > Details > Restore Default.

Fix 6: Download the update directly

If after a number of tries you are still not able to download the update, then you should consider downloading the update directly from the Apple App Store. You will be able to get the complete installer of your desired macOS version that you can download from the links provided below:

After downloading the installer you can refer to this guide from Apple on how to use these macOS installers to install the update.

Alternatively, you can also use this awesome third-party app called MDS (Mac Deploy Stick) which allows you to download and install the desired macOS version. You can download the app from here and simply select the macOS version that you want to download and install by going to the Download macOS section.

Note: You might end up losing your data if this process is done carelessly. Hence make sure to properly backup your macOS data prior to proceeding with the installation. Refer to Apple’s this guide for more on macOS backup creation.

Bottom Line

With that said, here comes the end of this fixing guide. I am hoping that the aforementioned fixes would have helped you in eliminating the “An error occurred while installing the selected updates.” The issue generally gets away by a simple restart or retying after a couple of hours. But in some cases, this issue can be due to insufficient storage or enrolment of the device in Beta updates. Hence you should accordingly create some free space and unenroll from the beta updates program. Lastly, if nothing works and there is an urgent need for the new update, then you can consider directly downloading the update from the App Store.
