Fix: Wsappx High Disk & CPU Usage on Windows 11, 10

fix wsappx High Disk and CPU Usage on Windows

It has always been a common issue in Windows 11 and Windows 10 that all of a sudden it gets slow, which is rather strange because you have just opened up your PC and only started one or two programs.

After checking the Task Manager you find that there is a program named Wsappx in two separate rows in Windows 11. Under them, you find the programs AppXSVC and ClipSVC. These both are hoggin much of your CPU or Disk usage. In Windows 10 you may find Wsappx(2) & Wsappx(3) utilizing many hardware resources of your PC.

If you are one of those who are facing performance problems then you are at the right place. In this fixing guide, I will tell you all about Wasppx and about all the fixes doing which you can resolve this problem.

What is Wsappx?

Wasppx is a process that runs in the background on Windows 11/10/8 PCs. It is part of the Windows on which the Windows Store(Microsoft Store) and Universal Windows Platform(UWP) of Microsoft rely.

This process includes two separate background processes or services on Windows 11 & Windows 10:

  1. AppX Deployment Service (AppXSVC) – This service provides infrastructure support for deploying Store applications. This service is started on demand and if disabled Store applications will not be deployed to the system, and may not function properly.
  2. Client License Service (ClipSVC) – This service provides infrastructure support to the Microsoft Store. This service is also started on demand but on some PC it is always automatic to provide you with updates to the Microsoft Store apps. If disabled then Microsoft apps may not work properly.

But if you are using Windows 8 then it has two processes namely:

  1. AppX Deployment Service (AppXSVC).
  2. WSService (Windows Store Service).

Why Wsappx is using so much CPU, Disk Resources

  • Whenever you use Microsoft store Wsappx will activate and use CPU, disk, etc.
  • Whenever a user installs an app or update then it will also have high CPU, GPU, & disk space.
  • When you install software or an app from outside the Microsoft store then also Wsappx will use high CPU, GPU, & disk space.
  • If you have enabled automatic updates then whenever any update is available Wsappx will automatically activate and start using PC resources.

Can I end the Wsappx or AppXSVC and ClipSVC processes?

Since Wsappx is needed only when you install an app or software or you have enabled automatic updates of all the app & Windows updates. Other than that there is no use of Wsappx. So, if you are not going to use any new software any time soon, and also you do not need to update software then you can end Wsappx( or AppXSVC & ClipSVC) service.

But I will recommend not ending Wsappx altogether as it is not recommended to end a crucial process of Windows. As you can clearly see, Wsappx is a very necessary service that manages the installation of all the apps, software & updates.

I recommend you fix the issue rather than completely end it as every now and then your PC needs an app or an updated component to run smoothly.

How to fix Wsappx taking High Disk and CPU usage?

We have provided you with the following fixes for resolving the issue which is caused by Wsappx:

1. End the Microsoft Store

Many times Microsoft Store automatically runs in the background as it keeps looking for new updates whenever your PC has access to the Wi-Fi or the internet and starts using Wsappx services which in turn uses high CPU usage. So you should try to end the Microsoft Store from the task manager:

  1. Open your Task Manager by searching for the same in the search bar of the Start Menu. You can also press the Ctrl+Shfit+Esc key combination on your Keyboard.
  2. In the task Manager window switch to the Processes tab, and in the Apps section look for Microsoft Store.
  3. Select it by clicking on it. Right-click on it and then click on End Task to kill it.
  4. Once done restart your PC and see if the problem is solved.

If this didn’t work then head on to the next fix.

2. Turn off Automatic updates of Microsoft Store apps.

If you have turned on automatic updates for Microsoft Store apps then it will automatically update the apps in the background and will start Wsappx services. These services will start using CPU & memory and will hamper the performance of the PC. Follow the given below steps to turn off automatic updates of Microsoft Store apps:

  1. Search for Microsoft Store in the search bar of the Start menu and hit enter.
  2. In Microsoft Store click on the Profile picture at the Upper right corner and then on App Settings.
  3. When the settings page opens up toggle the App Updates switch off.
  4. Restart your PC and see if the high resource usage issue is fixed or not.

3. Kill the Wsappx process (or AppXSVC and ClipSVC)

If the Wsappx services are weirdly consuming high resources, you should try killing it. Here is how you can do that:

  1. Open your Task Manager by searching it in the start menu. You can also press the Ctrl-Shift+Esc key combination on your keyboard.
  2. In the Task manager window switch to the Processes tab, then in the Background section scroll down and look for Wsappx.
  3. Select Wsappx by clicking on it. Then right-click on it and finally click on End Task to kill it.
  4. Once done, restart your PC and check if the resource usage is now under control or not.

4. Disable Windows Store

If you think you can install any app from outside the Microsoft Store then you can disable it. When you disable the Windows store then Wsappx will only run whenever you install an app or software after downloading it. You can try disabling Windows Store to fix the issue of high memory usage. You can effectively disable Windows Store by using Local Group Policy and Registry Editor.

Follow the given steps to disable Windows Store on your computer now:

4A. Disable Windows Store using Local Group Policy

  1. Press Windows + R keys on the keyboard to open the Run dialog box. Type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.
  2. When the Local Group Policy opens up navigate to the following path in the left pane and hit enter:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Store.
  3. On the right side double-click the “Turn off the Store application “ policy.
  4. When the Turn off the Store application pop-up appears click on Enabled and click on OK to save and exit.

After following the above steps, restart your PC.

4B. Disable Windows Store using Registry Editor

You can also use Registry Editor to disable Windows Store if you are on a home version of windows. In Windows Home version Group Policy Editor does not work and hence Windows Home users need to use Registry Editor to disable the windows store. Follow the given below steps to disable the Windows Store:

  1. Press Windows + R keys on the keyboard to open the Run dialog box, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. When the Registry Editor opens up follow the following tree:
  3. Create a new DWORD value within the Windows Store keys and name it as
RemoveWindowsStore and set the value as 1.
  4. Save the Changes and exit Registry.
  5. Restart your PC and see if the issue is resolved.

Note: When you disable Windows Store, Windows Store apps cannot be installed or updated. If you try to open the Windows Store app now, you will get the following message:

Windows Store is not available on this PC. Contact your system administrator for more information.

Apps like Mail, Movies & TV, Photos, Calculator, and OneNote need this app for automatic updates. If you need frequent updates to these apps then disabling the windows store is not recommended. You need to try the other fixes then.

4. Extend Virtual Memory

This is the efficient solution to fix the high CPU & disk usage by Wsappx services. As these services take up disk space then this fix will surely work out. Here are the steps to increase Virtual Memory:

  1. Press the Windows key to open the start menu and search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and hit enter.
  2. When the pop-up opens up. Click on Advance Tab and in the Virtual Memory section click on Change.
  3. Uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox.
  4. Select the drive where the OS is installed and click on Custom size.
  5. Set the initial size equal to your RAM size in MB and the Maximum size to double the Initial size.
  6. Click Set and OK to keep all the changes.
  7. Once done restart your PC and see if the issue of high disk usage is resolved.

5. Check and Clean the Disk’s Internal Error

If the corrupted or missing system files are the cause of such high CPU, GPU, or memory usage, then you should consider running the Windows Disk error-checking tools like Windows DISM and SFC Scans.

These scans will make sure to restore and repair any missing or corrupted system files. Please refer to our DISM, SFC & Disk Check scans guide.

6. Change the Value of AppXSVC in the Registry

You can change the Registry value of AppXSVC to 4(which means Log to a database disabled). Here is how you can do that:

  1. Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard to launch the Run application.
  2. Type in regedit and hit the OK button. This will open up the Registry Editor.
  3. Navigate to the following key using the left side pane:
  4. Double-click on the Start value then set its Value data to 4. Click the Ok button to finalize your change.
  5. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer and check if you still have the same issues with Wsappx.

7. Scan your Computer to check for Virus

Most people often ignore that in certain cases, this problem is caused by viruses or malware infection. There are many spyware and malware programs that automatically install unwanted apps onto your system, thereby Wsappx uses high memory and disk usage. For a very long time if you have not scanned your computer for infection and viruses it’s time to do it now:

  1. Run anti-virus software on your PC and let it scan your whole computer.
  2. Once the antivirus finds threats or suspicious files, remove them from your PC.
  3. Restart your computer and see if the high disk usage by Wsappx is resolved.

8. Troubleshoot in Clean Boot State

This is our last fix that you can try to resolve the Wsappx high CPU usage issue. In this fix, we will perform a Clean boot. It will make Windows run only on a few essential drivers for settings and startup programs. This will help you manually resolve the Wsappx high CPU or high disk usage issue from startup.
Follow the given steps to perform a clean Boot:

  1. Type MSConfig in Search and hit Enter to open System Configuration Utility.
  2. Go to the General tab, click on Selective Startup, check(right tick) Load System Services and Use the original boot configuration.
  3. Click OK to continue.
  4. Go to the Services tab, select “Hide All Microsoft Services” and click “Disable all”.
  5. Click on OK and then on Apply.
  6. Once Done restart your computer and Windows will execute a Clean Boot. It will help resolve your issue. After this, you can repeat the above-listed steps and uncheck Load System Services, save the changes and restart the computer.
