Fix: AirPods says connected but the sound coming from the phone

If your AirPods are connected but the sound delivery is still being done by the device with which your AirPods are connected then this can primarily be the issue of improper connectivity.

A buggy connection between the AirPods and the Phone can cause this error. But there can be other reasons like software incompatibility, or lack of permission to the app by which you are trying to listen to the audio on your AirPods.

1. Restart the Phone

Primarily, you can perform a restart of the device on which you are playing the sound or music. It can be your iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.

If the device is suffering from any Bluetooth connectivity corruption within the system software then rebooting the device will definitely reset the device’s functioning or any of the faulty background processes or bugs.

2. Update the Software

Software incompatibility can also make the wrong sound delivery. This is because if your Apple device is not running on the updated firmware, then there are chances that the AirPods and the device will suffer from some sort of connectivity issues.

Hence to make sure that the compatibility of the devices with the AirPods is completely fine, you can check for pending updates.

3. Reconnect AirPods

When you are sure that the connectivity issue is not from the side of your phone, this is the time to make sure the AirPods themselves are not causing the issue.

To check the connectivity from the AirPods side is not the issue, you can disconnect and then reconnect them to your iPhone. To do this:

1. Place the AirPods inside the case and close the lid. This will disconnect your AirPods.

2. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth.

3. Switch the Bluetooth off and turn it back on after 5 to 10 seconds.

4. Now, open the AirPods case and bring them close to your iPhone.

5. Tap on Connect when the popup appears.

Once the AirPods get connected to the device see if the issue is still there.

4. Reset AirPods

If re-connecting the AirPods didn’t fix the issue then you can reset the AirPods to establish the connection between your AirPods and the Apple device from a new and fresh end. To do so:

1. Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait for 30 seconds.

2. On your iPhone go to Settings > Bluetooth > info icon located next to the AirPods.

5. Check out App permissions

There are chances that your AirPods and the device are connected properly and are also working fine but the issue is with that specific app where you are playing the audio or music. There can be a lack of permissions for that specific app limiting it to using the AirPods via the Bluetooth connection.

You can check this by using any other app and see if it is able to deliver the audio via the AirPods. Once you have confirmed that the sound output is coming out of the phone while using any specific app (say Spotify) then you can check if the app has proper permissions. To do so:

1. Open Settings and go to Privacy.

3. Look for the app you want to grant Bluetooth permission to and toggle its switch to on.
