5 Ways to Fix Battle.net “Battle.net Update Agent went to sleep. Attempting to wake it up” Error

Blizzard’s Battle.net app utilizes a process called Agent to install and update games. From World of Warcraft to Overwatch and Call of Duty: Warzone, this process is crucial for file installation, game launch, and data download. Without it, players would be unable to engage in their preferred pastime.

On occasion, players may encounter the error message “Blizzard Agent went to sleep” while attempting to launch, install, or update a game. This error indicates an issue with the Agent, resulting in an inability to perform any of these actions.

Fix Battle.net Update Agent Went to Sleep

However, the problem is not always with the Agent. In most cases, it is the Blizzard servers that are at fault. If you receive this error message during server maintenance or patching, there is little you can do but wait for the servers to resume normal operation.

To determine whether this is the case, you can follow these steps:

  • Check @BlizzardCS on Twitter.
  • Visit the battle.net technical support forums for World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm.
  • Check sites like DownDetector.

If you confirm that the servers are not down, the problem may lie with your local security software such as your firewall or antivirus.

Local security software can sometimes stop working with the application for various reasons. The primary reason for this is that it no longer recognizes the application, especially after an update. As a result, it prevents the application from connecting to the servers, resulting in the “Blizzard Agent went to sleep” prompt.

There are several ways to solve this issue:

1. Restart Battle.net

Restart the Battle.net application. If there are no changes, restart your computer and try launching the application again.

2. Temporarily disable Firewall and Antivirus

Update your local security programs or temporarily uninstall them. Updates to the Battle.net app could cause your security programs to view it as unsafe. Updating them, and if that doesn’t work, uninstalling them, might cause them to recognize the app.

On this fixing route consider disabling your Windows Firewall and if you are using some 3rd-party antivirus, consider disabling or uninstalling it.

3. Allow the game through Windows Firewall

Create an exception in your firewall or antivirus. If you are a Windows user,

1. Search for Firewall in your search box, and open Firewall & Network Protection.

2. Choose the Allow an App through the Firewall option.

3. Click the checkbox beside the app (game) you are trying to launch and click OK.

If the problem is with your antivirus, consider disabling the 3rd-party antivirus as well.

4. Clear Blizzard and Battle.net cache

First, exit the Blizzard launcher and other related apps.

1. Now, launch the Task Manager, and confirm if both the launcher and Agent are ended. If not, manually close them.

2. Click Windows + R to open the “Run” window, input %programdata% into the open window, and click OK.

3. Look for Blizzard Entertainment and Battle.net folders in the Program Data folder that will come up, then delete them.

Exit the window and restart the launcher.

5. Reinstall Blizzard

If none of the above works, uninstall and reinstall the Blizzard application on your system. This should get rid of the “Blizzard Agent went to sleep” prompt and restore normalcy.
