If you are experiencing a bad battery backup or sudden battery drain issue on your iPhone or iPad after updating to a newly released iOS update then there is no need to amaze as it has been a tradition for Apple to deliver such issues with the initial release of the new updates.

If you are one of those iOS users and are looking for some solution to this problem then stick around to this fixing guide and I’ll share some pro tips and workarounds that you can try to improve your battery life on a new buggy iOS update.

Fixing battery drain issues on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch running iOS

Battery drain issue is one extremely common for a new iOS update. This issue mostly occurs due to bad optimization or bug in the software. Though this issue is software-related and will completely be solved by Apple itself in a new update, here are some tips and workarounds that you can try on your devices to at least get a better battery life than your current situation.

For the sake of convenience, I am going to take the iPhone into consideration while explaining the fixes, but most of them also work on the rest of the devices i.e. iPads and iPod Touches.

1. Restart the device

Quite straightforward and the simplest thing to do if you encounter any abnormal behavior on your device is to restart it once. If there is any specific background app, process, or glitch that is causing the unusual battery drain that will most probably be closed upon restart. Once the device is restarted, observe the battery backup and see if it is any better.

Restart iPhone X, 11, 12, 13

  • Press and hold the power and volume button until the power off slider appears.
  • Drag the slider to switch the phone off.
  • Press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears.

Restart iPhone SE (2020), 8, 7 and 6

  • Press and hold the power button until the power off slider appears.
  • Drag the slider to turn off the iPhone.
  • Press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo to boot the device.

Restart iPhone SE, 5, and earlier

  • Press and hold the power button on the top until the power off slider appears.
  • Drag the slider to turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears. Wait for the phone to boot.

2. Check the apps on your device

After the update, there are chances that the apps you were using previously are not well-compatible anymore. As a result, those apps can cause issues with battery optimizations. You should keep your eye on the battery usage of various apps that are installed. To check the battery consumption go to your device Settings and then tap on Battery.

Once you have tracked the apps that are consuming unusually high battery percentages, you can do the following things:

1. Disable the Background App Refresh option for the apps. This feature enables the apps to allows the apps to automatically search for new information even in the background. Simply go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

In the case of Spotify, you can switch its toggle off completely if the issue is specifically caused by it as is reported by many of the users.

2. Disable Auto App Updates in case of the phone is constantly looking for updates for no reason in the background.

To disable Auto App Updates, go to Settings > App Store > switch off the Apps and App Update toggles under the AUTOMATIC DOWNLOADS section.

3. Unistall the app if it is not in use and is just there on your phone with the hope that it will be in use sometime in the coming future.

I would also highly advise killing the apps as soon as you are done using them. Swipe up from the bottom home bar and hold the swipe along the middle to open recent apps (on Face ID models) or double-click the home button for the same (on Touch ID models). From there swipe the app cards to kill the apps you are done using for now.

3. Save battery by disabling the Widgets

You can save quite a bit of battery juice by disabling the unnecessary widgets in your iOS device. The widgets definitely come in handy to deliver quick info and feature right on the home screen of the device.

But if it is possible for you to disable those widgets or at least those that are not so useful or are just for looks, will definitely help you in placing the battery back up a step or two above your current situation. To remove the widgets:

1. Move your home screen to the extreme left and click on te Edit button at the bottom.

2. Now tap on the minus button () located at the top right of the widget windows.

3. Tap on Remove to confirm.

4. Enable Low Power mode

Even if you have a new version of iOS, there are some old-school features that are still there and one of them is the Low Power mode.

This enables the user to put the phone in the mode to consume as much less power as possible. To enable Low Power Mode:

1. Open Settings.

2. Go to Battery.

3. Tap on the Low Power Mode to switch its toggle on.

5. Use Airplane Mode, manually enable/disable wireless services and Location services

Enabling the Airplane mode on the phone disconnects it from all kinds of wireless services, leading to a significant saving on battery juice. Wireless services like Wi-Fi, Cellular Mobile data, Bluetooth, etc. if are continuously running for no reason can spend your battery juice for no real use.

Hence you can either keep the phone on Airplane mode when is not in use to save battery or you can also keep the Mobile Data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth off when are not in use.

All the options i.e. Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, and Bluetooth are available directly in the control center and can be turned on or off directly from there. To open the control centre, simply swipe down from the top right-half portion of your screen.

Also, the location services play a major role in churning out the battery juice in the background. Hence allowing the Location Services to a selected number of useful apps and using the location services while using the apps are two of the best practices.

You can manage the Location Services by going into Settings > Privacy > Location Services. From here you can disable the Location Services and can also set the select the preferred settings for each app selectively as per your needs.

6. Regulate the display brightness

The display consumes a big chunk of your battery, especially its backlight. Long you use your phone on high brightness, the more it consumes the battery. Hence using the display at high brightness only in conditions like direct sunlight is a good practice to save a couple of hours of screen on time.

Keeping the auto-brightness on will definitely help you in the same, by automatically setting the display brightness depending on the surroundings.

To enable Auto-Brightness:

1. Open Settings.

2. Go to Accessibility and then Display & Text Size.

3. Toggle the Auto-Brightness switch on.

If in case you are not getting good results with the auto-brightness, you can switch it off and take the control in your hands completely and adjust the brightness manually from the control center. One additional thing that you can do is to use Dark Mode on your phone. You can turn the Dark Mode on from the same Display & Brightness settings.

7. Disable Raise to Wake

The Raise to Wake feature allows the phone to automatically turn the screen on lifting the phone up from the table or pocket, eliminating the step of pressing the power button for the same.

If you frequently lift your phone from one place to another and the Raise to Wake is on, this will definitely consume a chunk of your battery for no reason. Hence you are advised to disable it. To do so:

1. Open Settings from the home screen.

2. Tap on the Display & Brightness option.

3. Disable the Raise to Wake feature from there.

8. Disable Auto-Play Videos and Reduce Motion

Two more things that can enhance the battery life of your device are to use the Reduce Motion feature and disable the Auto-Play Videos in your Safari browser.

Using the Reduce Motion feature will disable the different UI animations. You can do so by Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Turn on Reduce Motion.

Also, if you are someone who uses Safari a lot, disable the Auto-Play feature to make sure that no video automatically plays when you browse a website.

To disable this go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion. Now, turn off  Auto-Play Video Previews.

9. Keep track of the app and software updates

If you are facing the issue with some specific iOS version then it is highly likely that Apple will make solve this issue in the upcoming updates.

Also, keep track of the applications that are installed to make sure they are not interrupting the current iOS version of yours by keeping them updated.

10. Reset All Settings

Lastly, you can give try to Reset All Settings of your iPhone. This workaround has worked for quite a lot of iOS users in the past having the same battery drain issue.

To reset all settings on your iPhone:

1. Open Settings.

2. Tap on General.

3. Select the Transfer or Reset iPhone option.

4. Click on Reset and then on Reset All Settings.

5. You will be asked to enter the password to initiate the process.

Here comes the end of this fixing guide and I am hoping that after going through this guide you will be able to improve the battery backup of your Apple device. The issue is definitely causing due to the new iOS update and there is no working fix that has worked solidly for any of the iOS users to completely fix the issue as of writing this guide.

However, you can still follow some best practices and tips to get the most out of your iOS device. In the meantime, you’ll have to wait for the new iOS update with the hope that Apple will fix this issue in that upcoming update and I’ll also be updating this guide if I come across any working solid fix.
